Quitline Fax Referral Form Updated

On August 1, the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline fax referral form was updated with the new fax number. The updated form can be found at: www.dhhs.ne.gov/Documents/QuitlineFax.pdf.

New Nebraska Adult Tobacco Survey Report Now Available on TFN Website

The Nebraska Adult Tobacco Survey is a statewide, phone-survey of adults aged 18 and older. Core questions assess adults’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviors related to tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, use of cessation assistance and their awareness and support of evidence-based interventions. The report summarizing the findings from the surveys conducted in 2018 and 2019 is now online.

New Study Examines Tips® Campaign and Smoking Cessation in Adults

A study published in Preventing Chronic Disease, credits the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Tips from Former Smokers® campaign with an estimated 16.4 million quit attempts among adults in the U.S from 2012-2018, and 1,005,419 sustained quits.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently released new ads as part of its “Real Cost Campaign” displaying real situations surrounding teens who do whatever it takes to vape. The videos are based on real stories and the campaign used non-actor teens to capture to the moments.

Youth E-Cigarette Use is Down, But 3.6 Million Still Use E-Cigarettes

The CDC, in collaboration with various partners, recently released two papers in the Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) highlighting recent changes in U.S. e-cigarette use and sales.

The first study showed that about 3.6 million U.S. youth reported current e-cigarette use in 2020, reflecting a decline from 5.4 in 2019, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS). The second study analyzed retailer data from 2014-2020, to assess trends in U.S. e-cigarette sales. The retail sales data are consistent with NYTS findings.

Park MGM Becomes First Smoke-Free Casino on the Las Vegas Strip

When MGM Resorts reopens ParkMGM in Las Vegas at the end of the month, it will re-emerge as a 100% smoke-free casino resort. The president of MGM Resorts’ Las Vegas portfolio said the company “identified an opportunity to be responsive to recuring guest demand for a fully non-smoking casino on the Strip.” Read more here.

Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids has made a fact sheet with more information about the Caron Treatment Centers program, a program supported by Altria and being promoted to school, and the harms of industry-funded school-based youth prevention programs.

Sharon’s 12-year-old granddaughter is in junior high now. In this video, Sharon talks about her fear that her granddaughter will give in to peer pressure and try smoking. She says kids don’t realize that it doesn’t take long to get hooked.

Smoking Cessation & Cancer Survivors

A study of 381,989 adults diagnosed with cancer has been published in JAMA Network Open. The study concluded that cancer survivors are increasingly likely to report quitting smoking over time, and that several factors, including educational attainment and diagnosis of a smoking related cancer, make one more likely to report quitting smoking.

Web-Based Tool Calculates Lives Saved, Policy Implications of Tobacco Control

A web-based tool from Yale School of Public Health allows users to simulate the life-saving impact of actual and potential tobacco control policies. New estimates from the tool show the new federal law raising the age of legal tobacco purchase to 21 could save over 100,000 lives over the rest of the century.

Insurance Company Highlights Benefit of Smoke-Free Housing, Offers Discount

American Family Insurance recently wrote a guest post for the Minnesota Smoke-Free Housing Initiative which shared their perspective on the benefits of smoke-free housing and highlighted a discount offered through their company for property-owners with policies in place. Other insurance companies may offer the same benefit and this may be something to talk to property owners about when discussing the value of smoke-free policies.

New Report on POS Trends from ASPiRE

The ASPiRE Center has released a new report focused on commercial tobacco at the point-of-sale (POS) location. A variety of data sources, including interviews and surveys, were used to inform the publication, Tobacco Retail Policy Trends in 2019: Insights from the Field. The report provides findings on current retail policy, barriers to implementing and enforcing POS policies, industry opposition and preemption.
