Refer PatientsNebraska Tobacco Quitline Makes Referring Patients Easier!

The Nebraska Tobacco Quitline has a new referral option for health care providers.

Providers can now refer patients using an online web referral, or the updated fax referral form. Each year a majority of tobacco users try to quit, but less than one-third use FDA-approved cessation medications, or behavioral counseling, to support their quit attempts. With the online referral it is easier to connect patients, who are ready to quit tobacco, to evidence-based cessation services. Regardless of insurance coverage, the Quitline offers Nebraskans free access to quit coaches and help getting free FDA-approved medication (patch, gum or lozenge). The online referral form, along with the fax referral form are available at www.QuitNow.ne.gov/providers

Statewide Restrictions on Flavored e-Cigarette

The objective of this study, published on JAMA Network Open, was to assess whether implementation of statewide restrictions on flavored e-cigarette sales in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington was associated with a reduction in total e-cigarette unit sales from 2014 to 2020. These findings suggest that not all e-cigarette users who purchased non–tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes switched to purchasing tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes after policy implementation.

Did banning certain flavors mean a decrease in the use of e-cigarettes? The short answer is yes! Read the finding here.

How the Tobacco Industry is Renewing its Assault on Science

The tobacco industry has reinvigorated its efforts to infiltrate scientific spaces and mislead the public, according to a Truth Initiative® editorial in the American Journal of Public Health that exposes tactics that mirror those the industry used for decades to deceive the public about the health risks of cigarettes.

Industry efforts include sponsoring entire issues of prestigious research journals and participating in tobacco control research conferences, where they present tobacco industry-sponsored research alongside independent, credible public health research, and gain critical insight into tobacco control evidence and strategy. The authors call for strengthening practices to protect scientific research from tobacco industry influence on scientific and regulatory efforts.

Oral Health in America: Advances and Challenges

The newly issued report, from the National Institutes of Health, provides a comprehensive snapshot of oral health in America, including an examination of oral health across the lifespan and a look at the impact the issue has on communities and the economy. Major take-aways from the report include:

  • Healthy behaviors can improve and maintain an individual’s oral health, but these behaviors are also shaped by social and economic conditions.
