HUD’s Smoke-Free Policy Guidebook

Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Office of Public and Indian Housing recently released a guidebook to assist Public Housing Authorities in the implementation of HUD’s Smoke-Free Policy in July 2018. The full package can be found here.


OSH Factsheet

A new factsheet from the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) shows how the organization partners with states to protect kids and help smokers quit. The graphic demonstrates how OSH serves states and saves money by providing critical linkages, expertise, resources and technical assistance to maximize impact. Find the factsheet here.


New Jersey Raises Minimum Smoking Age to 21

Gov. Chris Christie signed into law raising the minimum age to buy cigarettes, tobacco products and electronic smoking devices to 21. Christie had vetoed the minimum age bill in 2016. Prior to signing the law, the minimum purchase age was 19. Read more here.


WHO Report on Global Tobacco Epidemic 2017

New WHO report includes latest evidence on the state of tobacco use and control efforts on a global scale. The report details the large growth during the past decade in the number of people worldwide being protected by best practice tobacco control measures. Report and infographic can be found here


Cigarettes to Record $7.7 Billion Loss by 2021

Researchers estimate that the cigarette market will experience a $7.7 billion loss by 2021. A $13.2 billion growth in heated tobacco products is expected to offset the loss, with the heated tobacco (or vapor product) market projected to grow 691 percent by 2021, making it the fastest-growing tobacco category. The U.S. is expected to become the second largest market by 2021. Read more here.


Study Examines ENDS Advertisements

This study examines the viewership of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) advertisements over a six year period. The data shows a greater than expected proportion of non-Hispanic white internet users were exposed to ENDS advertisements than the overall population, but the advertisements appealing to Hispanic users were more likely to compare ENDS to traditional cigarettes.

These findings may have important implications for smoking cessation interventions aimed at minority ENDS users. Read more here.

Effects of Prenatal Exposure to Waterpipe Tobacco Smoke 

Waterpipe tobacco smoking has increased in prevalence worldwide, including among pregnant women. In this study, researchers investigate the effect of prenatal maternal waterpipe tobacco smoke exposure during different stages of pregnancy on learning and memory of adult offspring rats. Attitudes Toward Tobacco 21 Among US Youth

An important movement in reducing youth smoking is to restrict the supply of cigarettes to youth by raising the minimum purchase age to 21. This study examines attitudes toward Tobacco 21 among youth and their correlations with tobacco use. Read more about the findings here.
