FDA to Review Menthol Flavor Petition

Earlier this year, public health groups filed a lawsuit seeking to compel the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to act on a 2013 citizen petition urging the agency to prohibit menthol as a flavor in cigarettes. After unsuccessful attempts to dismiss the case, FDA has stated it will respond to the merits of the citizen petition by Jan. 29, 2021. Comments can be submitted to the citizen petition docket to supplement the petition.

Youth Adult E-Cigarette Use Before and After Coronavirus Pandemic

An article published on JAMA Network examines the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on underage youth and young adult e-cigarette use and access. The study accounts for factors like shelter-in-place orders and nicotine dependence severity.

In a nationally representative study published in Tobacco Use Insights, researchers measured public support for a variety of e-cigarette-related policies and assessed differences in support by demographics, tobacco use, geographic region and strength of state-level clean indoor air policies.

New: Tips® Military Service Members and Veterans Outreach Kit

Data shows that active duty military and veterans have a higher tobacco use prevalence than the national average. To help with outreach, CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health has released a Tips® Military Service Members and Veterans Media Outreach Kit. The package includes a fact sheet, template press release and a resource package that includes ads, bios and quotes from Tips participants who are veterans, as well as military and veteran social media messages and images.
