Smokeless Tobacco Use Shifts to Young Men and Boys
According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, since 1970 smokeless tobacco has shifted from a product used primarily by older men to one used predominately by young men and boys. FDA Announces Comprehensive Plan to Shift Trajectory of Tobacco-Related Disease
The new approach, will serve as a multi-year roadmap to better protects kids and reduce tobacco-related disease and death. The plan places nicotine, and the issue of addiction, at the center of the agency’s tobacco regulation efforts. Read more on the changes here.
2017 Tobacco-Free College Program
Truth Initiative® is launching its new Tobacco-Free College Program, which offers 17-month grants of up to $20,000 to community colleges and minority serving institutions to adopt a 100 percent tobacco-free college policy. Interested in knowing more–more information can be found here.
2016 Adult Tobacco Survey
According to the data gathered in the ATS Survey, the Total Adult Tobacco Use Rate is currently 24.4%, with 16.6% of individuals reporting regular use of cigarettes. Read more about the findings here.

FDA to Expand Public Education Campaign
The agency plans to expand its “The Real Cost” public education campaign to include messaging to teens about the dangers of e-cigarettes and ENDS this fall, with a full-scale campaign to launch in 2018. These efforts are part of the agency’s new comprehensive plan for tobacco and nicotine regulation. Read more here.
Associations Between Tobacco Control Mass Media Campaign Expenditure and Smoking Prevalence and Quitting in England
Although it has been established that mass media campaigns can increase smoking cessation rates, there is little research done on the effect of government spending on those rates. This study, based out of England, assessed the association over 8 years between mass media expenditure and quit attempts, smoking cessation and smoking prevalence. Read more here.
