Quit Smoking?

January 6, 2012

PEORIA, Ill. — One of the most common New Year’s resolutions people make is to quit smoking. It’s no secret that it’s tough to kick the habit. According to statistics furnished by the American Cancer Society, it takes the average smoker 14 attempts to give up cigarettes. But more people are succeeding. Research shows that locally almost 15 percent of Peoria County residents currently smoke. That’s down from almost 25 percent six years ago.  Experts say if you want to stop smoking, you need to have a plan.”When you think you want to quit smoking prepare in advance,” said Elise Pate from the Peoria Office of the American Cancer Society. “You want to get rid of any ash trays, lighters, cigarettes in your house and get prepared for the day. That way you don’t have these triggers around you at your home or in your car or wherever it might be.” Another tip is to make a list of healthy distractions, like exercising or calling a friend, when you feel the urge to light up.
