New Tobacco Tax Fact Sheets Available
On July 1, 2019, the overall states’ average tobacco tax increased to $1.81 per pack of cigarettes. An updated list of rates and rankings from Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) can be found here. A handful of states also passed taxes on e-cigarettes this year. An updated fact sheet on Other Tobacco Product (OTP) rates can be found here. U.S. Adults’ Attitudes Toward Lowering Nicotine Levels in Cigarettes
An article recently published in the journal, American Journal of Preventative Medicine, assesses U.S. adults’ attitudes toward lowering nicotine levels in cigarettes to a less addictive level. The results showed most adults favored the change, including 8 in 10 current smokers. Read more here.

According to CTFK and other public health organizations, JUUL has been running ads around the U.S. touting the company’s desire to solve the youth e-cigarette epidemic. Public health organizations have teamed up to set the record straight: JUUL created the epidemic by enticing kids with sweet flavors and hooked them with a strong nicotine hit. CDC: State-Specific Prevalence of Quit Attempts Among Adult Cigarette Smokers
An article recently published in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), provides state-specific trends in the prevalence of past-year quit attempts among adult cigarette smokers. Data from the 2011-2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) was analyzed. Read more here.

Atlanta Council Adopts Comprehensive Smoke-Free Law to Protect Citizens
The Atlanta City Council has delivered a major victory for public health by approving a comprehensive smoke-free law that protects the right of all Atlanta residents, workers and visitors to breathe clean air. Atlanta, which was one of the largest cities in the United States without a comprehensive smoke-free law, now joins the ranks of cities protecting everyone from the serious health hazards of secondhand smoke. FDA Announces Release of Digital Age Verification Calendars for Retailers
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the availability of a digital age verification calendar as part of the “This is Our Watch” voluntary retailer education program. The digital calendar is being mailed to retailers across the country and will be available through the Center for Tobacco Products’ Exchange Lab soon.

Regulating Commercial Tobacco Product Flavors at a Local Level
Research continues to demonstrate that flavored commercial tobacco products are especially attractive to youth and that they increase use among all populations by masking the harsh taste of tobacco and nicotine.
As a result, many states and local communities across the country are restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products. The Public Health Law Center has created a chart on U.S. sale restrictions and a document of tips and tools for regulations.
