Several national organizations have recently published reports comparing state tobacco control policies and programs against best practices and recommendations.


FDA: New Warning Label Deadline Extended

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that as a result of a federal court ruling, it will delay the effective date of the updated cigarette warning labels by 90 days, to January 14, 2022.

Quit Smoking Calendar & Tip Sheet to Engage Employees in Quitting Tobacco

The Truth Initiative has released a 2021 quit-smoking calendar and tip sheet as part of its EX smoking cessation program. The resources are designed to help businesses maximize engagement in their smoking cessation program. The five-page tip sheet also includes data about the best months to bump up promotion and creative ideas for promoting tobacco cessation in the workplace

Pull Your Mask Down to Smoke: Themes from Young Adults’ Pandemic Nicotine Use

In this study, published in, Tobacco Use and Misuse, most current tobacco users reported their tobacco use stayed the same or increased since the pandemic and attributed this to being home more with greater time/boredom. COVID-19 impacted purchasing behaviors such as purchasing products in greater quantities, through the Internet, or at a different store due to perceived cleanliness.

CDC: COVID-19 One-Stop Shop Toolkits for Various Audiences

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have developed toolkits with videos, social media, PSAs, print resources, checklists, FAQs, and web resources to communicate with a variety of audiences that tobacco control partners regularly work with (e.g., businesses and workplaces, education, faith-based organizations, healthcare providers, etc.). These toolkits offer an outreach opportunity to engage with these groups to offer support as they deal with COVID-19.

Receipt of Cessation Treatments Among Medicaid Enrollees

Cigarette smoking prevalence is higher among adults enrolled in Medicaid than adults with private health insurance. State Medicaid coverage of cessation treatments has been gradually improving in recent years; however, the extent to which this has translated into increased use of these treatments by Medicaid enrollees remains unknown. This study estimates the state-level receipt of smoking cessation treatments and associated spending among Medicaid fee-for service enrollees who are trying to quit.
