FDA Launches New Website With Tobacco 21 Resources

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) has launched a website to provide the public with a single location for the latest information on Tobacco 21 legislation, which increased the federal minimum ages of sale of tobacco products to 21 years.

Available resources include a recently released webinar, “Recent Changes that Impact the Sale of Tobacco Products in Retail Establishments.” This webinar offers relevant information for retailers on what they should know about the legislation and the enforcement priorities guidance. Other resources on the web page include FAQs and information on resources to help retailers with age verification. Visit the website here.

Heated Tobacco Expands with Altria Announcing Third iQOS Market in U.S.

Altria has announced that the iQOS device will now be sold in a third market in the United States–Charlotte, North Carolina. The product was previously launched in Atlanta, Georgia, and Richmond, Virginia, sales at the new location in Charlotte will begin in April 2020. Court Upholds HUD Smoke-free Rule

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia rejected a challenge to HUD’s smoke-free rule and upheld the rule. The court rejected several claims brought by New York City Citizens Again Smoker Harassment (NYC C.L.A.S.H.), including claims that the HUD rule violates various constitutional provisions. According to an article shared by the Truth Initiative, vaping in the workplace is a bigger problem than most employers think. According to a study by Truth, 72% of people report “sometimes” or “often” seeing vapor clouds or e-cigarettes at work. Read more here

Smoke Breaks & the Cost to Hospitality Industry Employers’ Bottom Line

According to an article from the EX Program, nearly 1 in 3 people working in the hospitality industry use tobacco. Contributing to this higher-than-average rate is the stress that workers are frequently put under, as well as the culture of smoke breaks, that can be hard on non-smokers. Read more here.

FDA Sends Warning Letters on Sale of Unauthorized E-Cigarette Products

The FDA has issued warning letters to online and brick-and-mortar e-cigarette product retailers and manufacturers across the country who sell flavored, cartridge-based electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) products advising them that selling these products, which lack marketing authorization, is illegal. Effects of a Campus-Wide Tobacco-Free Policy on College Students & Staff

According to a study published in the Journal of American College Health, policy support and norms disapproving tobacco use on campus increased and self-reported use of any tobacco decreased after a tobacco-free policy was enacted. Read more here.

Exposure to Secondhand Aerosol from E-Cigarettes Among Youth on the Rise

According to a research letter published in JAMA Pediatrics, the increase in exposure to secondhand aerosol among U.S. youth is concerning. Secondhand aerosol is not harmless, but as the authors indicated, exposure could lead to increased curiosity and heightened susceptibility to use tobacco products. Read more here.

Truth Initiative Offering Tobacco and Vape-Free College Grants

The Truth Initiative is offering grants of up to $20,000 to minority-serving institutions, community colleges and women’s colleges to support the adoption and implementation of a 100% tobacco/vape-free policy. An informational webinar will be held on March 12 and 25. Applications are due May 12. Read more here.

Study: System Standardization Needed in Advising Patients to Quit Smoking

According to a study published in Clinical Pediatrics, standardized tobacco control efforts are needed in health care settings to support clinicians to screen all adolescents for tobacco use and advise every smoker, irrespective of smoking frequency, to quit use. Read more here.

Point-of-Sale Tobacco Advertising Restrictions Show Benefit in Scotland

In 2013 and 2015, Scotland banned point-of-sale tobacco displays in large and small retailers. Researchers examined data from before and have implementation of the ban. According to the report published in Public Health Research, the ban was associated with a decrease in youth smoking initiation. Read more here.
