The Nebraska Adult Tobacco Survey Report for 2017 is now available on the Tobacco Free Nebraska website. This report published in August 2018, highlights data gathered during the 2017 administration of the ATS. Read more here.


Call for Abstracts Open for the National Conference on Tobacco or Health 2019

Practitioners, researchers and other professionals working in tobacco control are encouraged to submit an abstract for consideration for the NCTOH. Submission deadline is November 16, 2018. Final content selections will be made in early 2019 and all submitters will be notified of the final status by early April 2019. The conference will be August 27-29, 2019 in Minneapolis, MN. FDA Takes Historic Enforcement Action To Address Youth E-Cigarette Use

In the largest coordinated enforcement effort in FDA’s history, the agency has issued more than 1,300 warning letters and fines to retailers who illegally sold JUUL and other e-cigarette products to minors during a nationwide blitz. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. stated that the agency intends to take new and significant steps to address the youth e-cigarette use epidemic. Read more here.


CDC Releases New E-Cig Materials for Parents and Youth Influencers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office on Smoking and Health, has developed new content for parents, teachers, coaches and healthcare providers. These materials are designed to provide up-to-date information about the risks of e-cigarette use among young people.

E-Cigarette Regulation Map Update

The Public Health Law Center has recently updated their interactive map of state e-cigarette regulations. The map is based on a 50-state survey (plus Washington, D.C.) of statutes pertaining to e-cigarette regulations as of June 15, 2018. Read more here.



Plastic Straw Ban? Cigarette Butts are the Single Greatest Source of Ocean Trash

Environmentalists are working to eliminate or rein in big sources of ocean pollution – plastic bags, plastic flatware and most recently straws. More than a dozen coastal cities prohibited plastic straws in 2018 and many more are considering a ban. But, cigarette butts are the number one man-made contaminant and they have been largely off-the-radar, until now. Read more here.


Federal Court Orders FDA to Quickly Implement Graphic Cigarette Warnings

A federal court has ordered the Food and Drug Administration to quickly issue a final rule requiring graphic health warning on cigarette packs and advertising, as mandated by the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Read more here.

This video created by American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest, Iowa Cancer Consortium and the Iowa Department of Public Health explores the issue of tobacco use among the LGBTQ population and encourages viewers to reduce the burden of tobacco use for all.

Study Examines Trends in Unit Sales of Flavored and Menthol E-Cigs in the U.S.

According to research published in Preventing Chronic Disease, the sales of flavored e-cigarette products have increased dramatically since 2012, with variations by product type and state. Nebraska was one of two states that showed an increase in menthol e-cigarette sales between 2012 and 2016. Read more here.

FDA Requires Warning Labels on E-Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products

On August 10, the FDA began to require warning labels on all packages and advertisements for e-cigarettes and other tobacco products subject to the 2016 “Deeming Rule”. For more information on this, read the FDA guidance on this issue found here.


FDA Warning Letter Halts Availability of E-Liquids Resembling Kid-Friendly Food

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, all 17 manufacturers, distributors and retailers that were warned by the agency in May, have stopped selling the E-liquids with labeling or advertising resembling kid-friendly food products. Read more here.

The FDA Center for Tobacco Products has created a new, intera style=”width: 100%;”y for federal, state and local public health professionals who educate retailers about the laws governing tobacco sales.

This community will house a peer-to-peer network and forum where participants can discuss best practices, distribute information and exchange materials and resources.
